To live in L.A. is very expensive.
Cheap hotel rooms starting with a daily fare of 40 $.
One funny way to save this money and meet interesting people, most of them
world-experiened backpackers and students is to spend the days (and nights) at Student
Inn.
It's centered in Hollywood - next to the Chinese Theatre. The hostel manager is John - a friendly and relaxed Greek guy. The hostel fare is between 10 and 15 $ (90 $ for one week - special offer, Summer 1999) and includes breakfast (toast with strawberry jam and coffee, sometimes fresh fruits).
I met during my two-weeks-stay in Hollywood a lot of funny and interesting people from New Zealand, Britain (Hello Joanne and John), Denmark (Birgitta, Kim, Kim, Lars,...), Canada (Starlet and friend), Australia (Tina), Argentina (Melina), Austria, Switzerland (Claudia :-) ) and some Germans (Elena, die Hamburger Mädels,...).
Next to the hostel there is a library (Ivar - 7 blocks east at Hollywood Blvd.) to check mails for free and the Cyber Java, a Internet Coffee Shop.
