Summer 1999
Summer Session
UCLA, California
One important part for all students is
to study abroad.
Why? - It's a interesting experience to meet other students, to change knowledge and
ideas, to communicate in a foreign language, to feel the spirit of other countries and
lifestyles.
One good place to meet people from all over the world is the UCLA Summer Session Program. It's especially for international students to get in contact with the American University system. The range of lectures is limited, smaller than in the regular semester, but allows to visit a lot of interesting classes.
Why UCLA? The worldwide reputation of the
UCLA is very good. I met some Americans and they think UCLA students are very smart. :)
Smart is also a good describtion for this campus.
If you plan to stay only for the Summer Session Program it's a good tip to book on-campus
housing. All residents are equipped with computer labs, exercise facilities, study lounges
and it's very easy to get in contact to other students there. The residence halls plan
trips to Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego and other tourist spots in California. The
campus is settled in Westwood - next to Bel Air and Santa Monica - in a beautiful area.
Westwood is a small village in Los Angeles (20 min. with the cab from the LAX airport, 5
min. walk from the on-campus residents) with a couple of movie theatres (most of the
Hollywood premieres are there), Bars (Maloneys,...) Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Burger King,
Tower Records, Aaahs!, Rite Aid, GAP, SubWay, and so on. So, Westwood's infrastructure is
very good.
The Santa Monica Big Blue Bus System has its Bus Depot next to the Campus. These busses are going to Venice Beach (nice place for the weekends), Santa Monica Pier and Beach, LAX and Malibu. Another bus system goes to Hollywood (30 min. bus ride) and Downtown.
If you want to use this trip for a special vacation you should rent a car. Los Angeles without a car, specially in Westwood, is no real fun. The L.A. clubs are distributed all over the very large city. Some are in Hollywood, Santa Monica and Down Town. To do a good clubbing tour it's recommended to know L.A. citizens. (Tip: Sugar - Santa Monica - European house club at Sat., The Gate, Charts at Thu).
